Abandoned Property Leads to Legends and More!

A 100+ year old farmhouse sits in the bend of one of Putnam County's darker, more dangerous roads.  Uninhabited for many years, this house became a source of legend for many a young person out legend tripping.

When I was in middle school, a friend was telling my mom and I about the location and its many tales.  According to anecdotal evidence, this home was once used by local kids dabbling in the occult and Satanism.  Because of these activities, not only the house, but the road running in front of it, is said to be haunted.

In one particularly disturbing tale, an acquaintance was traveling the road late at night, and as he approached the home, he saw something in the road.  It was a little girl, no more than five years old, wearing a blue dress.  He swerved to miss her and ended up crashing his car, completely totalling it against the rocky outcropping.

My mom, ever the skeptic, decided we'd go drive by the location and see what would happen.  As we drove past the house, the perfectly clear evening produced a large ball of fog.  The fog literally came up from the hill where the house was located, paused in front of the car, and did not dissipate until we (my friend and myself) started screaming for my mom to get the hell out of there, lol. The fog was dense, and only covered about a foot square area.  It hung fairly low to the ground---about the height of a small child.

Several years after that, my grandma came to visit and we got to talking about ghosts...and decided to take her out to the location to see if that same fog would emerge.  It didn't...but in its place were the strangest lights I have ever seen.  You could see the headlights of our car making a specific pattern as they hit and bounced off the cliff on the opposite side of the road.  However, these lights...which I kid you not, were shaped like SHOE PRINTS...came flying up over the embankment where the home was, across the road in front of our car, and up the cliff on the other side and into the woods.  There was a line of about 10 or 12 of these cartoon-y shoe print shapes.

Flash forward to another several years past that, and my mom, an educational diagnostician, was testing a student at one of the local schools.  Somehow, they started talking about ghostly legends, and this student told my mom another interesting tale from the immediate area.

The student's family lived nearby this particular home, but also another old home, where an elderly couple resided.  The family would often look in on the couple, and bring them food and supplies.  One day, they went to check on them, and the husband was not there.  The wife kept repeating that he was gone...out in the woods...with them.  Thinking the statement odd, but figuring he was just out, the family waited a few days and came back to check on them again.  This time, they found the woman to be missing.  The incident was reported, but neither the man nor woman were ever seen again.

    1. No, the house I've written about here is located on Rocky Step Road. And, I've recently discovered another spooky, and VERY historic home tucked away closer to the Winfield side, but also located off this road, that I'll be writing about soon.

Thank you for your comments, and for visiting Theresa's Haunted History!

  4. That's funny you said Rocky Step. As soon as I started reading this story I thought of "Dead Man's Curve" on Teays Valley Rd. just past Rocky Step.

    1. Dead Man's Curve on Teays Valley Road isn't the location discussed in this article, but that is an area that for whatever reason, I have driven (especially at night) and have felt extremely uneasy. It was a little before my time but I remember my mom telling me that the body of a young woman was found right off the road in that curve. She had been killed by I believe one or two young men that had been former students of my mom's. Hehehe, and there's a similarly creepy house not far from there, but its one I really discourage visiting, as the neighbors are quite vigilant about keeping trespassers out...my step-nephew found that out the hard way.

  5. Do you have anything related to the house sitting where Poplar Fork meets Hurricane Creek Road? I used to live in the house and there was some supernatural stuff that occurred daily. Locals say that Satanist groups practiced there. Any info?

    1. No, this is a privately owned location and I don't feel comfortable sharing that information without express consent of the owners.

  9. Sounds like the old manner that was just outside of Nitro as you are entering Rock Branch, the manner was torn down about 7 years ago but the foundation still remains.

    1. I used to love to go by that place when I was younger, and even today, every time I go by and see the empty spot where the home stood, I get a little sad. Unfortunately, I never did find out if anyone had any spooky stories about that particular location, which obviously isn't the same as the one I've written about here.

  10. The "Witch's Grave" does not and never existed at the Highland Church Cemetery. This FACT is clearly stated on the sign (unless vandals have destroyed it) by the driveway.
Serilda Wetzel was my Grandmother's Aunt. My Grandmother knew her and never was there any mention of Serilda being a witch during her lifetime. She was a generous and loving Christian. The ridiculous lies stated when vandals knocked over the grave marker, and the people who graciously replaced it set it backwards. Whether they didn't notice or were unable to turn it around properly is unknown.
As a Christian you should know there is no communication between the living and the dead. What ever you heard, saw and felt had absolutely nothing to do with Aunt Serilda's grave or any paranormal activity. I have attended a church service there, as many others have. There is no evil over shadowing the church or grave yard. I appreciate that you stress everyone should be respectful. I am asking you, especially as a sister in Christ, to help put a stop to these hurtful and ridiculous accusations. Be respectful. Thank you.
