Happy 2023!

Who wouldn't want to spend
NYE with THIS guy?

I've always heard that how you spend your New Year's is how the rest of the year will go for you...and I hope that's true! Last night I rang in the New Year with my spooky family---the crew from Spectral Research and Investigations. We had a little end-of-the-year get together at our home base (the maybe haunted and definitely historic Museum of Radio and Technology in Huntington, WV). Unfortunately, not all our members could attend, but the evening was still filled with good food, new friends, ideas for the upcoming year, and of course a little ghost hunting. My husband and my son were able to attend, making the evening extra special.

phantom sounds of an antique
crystal radio.

The paranormal fun continues today as I'll be busy reading, writing, and watching some spooky documentaries! Once again, I've decided to attempt the Ultimate Blog Challenge, which means that there will be a brand-new blog post EVERY day this month, and today will definitely be a research day. I actually did really well with this last year, completing the entire year with a whopping 108 new posts. Here's hoping I can surpass that in 2023. Here's hoping that in general, 2023 is a damn good year, for me and for all of us. 2022 was an especially difficult year for me, but despite the hard times, I am grateful for all the opportunities I was given. I spoke at several different events, attended quite a few conferences and workshops, and got to investigate lots of really interesting places. Most importantly, I met some really awesome people and got to work with some really awesome people in this field.

The room full of military communication
equipment has always been a favorite.

Usually in these New Year's posts I like to throw in some resolutions for the year ahead, but for the most part I'll skip that. However, please keep following me and the team on social media as we do have a LOT planned for this year. There is one thing you can help us with now---we just recently hit 100 subscribers on YouTube. This year, we'd like to increase that to 300 subscribers. If you haven't yet, please go subscribe to the SRI YouTube channel, and if you can, share share share! 2023 will see a variety of different types of videos being posted, in addition to our full-length documentary-style investigation videos. And as always, feel free to shoot me over any comments, ideas or suggestions for what YOU'D like to see!

Thank you so much for sticking with me another year and your continued support of Theresa's Haunted History. I love learning new things about the paranormal field and discovering strange and fascinating pieces of local history...but what's really exciting is getting to share it with you! Have a great year and as always...

Stay spooky!

Spooky Season 2022 is Finally Here!

From SRI's Fairfield County Infirmary
Investigation in September

I mean, it's spooky season all year long here at Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State, but as October 1st finally arrives, it seems...official! Along with plenty of ghosts, spooks, monsters, and goblins, October also brings along with it another round of the Ultimate Blog Challenge. That's right---thirty one more straight days of brand new paranormal content here on the blog.

As some readers may already know, I lost my mom last week after a nearly 6 month battle with cancer. I haven't had a whole lot of time, energy, or motivation lately to focus on my work, but I'm desperately needing a distraction. Hopefully, this blog will provide that much needed outlet for me to concentrate on during these next few months, and the UBC will give me the push to actually get it published. I've certainly got quite a back log of content I've been wanting to share with ya'll! Despite everything going on, I've still tried to keep up with my paranormal investigations with Spectral Research and Investigations, my spooky reading, making research notes on cases I'd like to study further, and going to as many local paranormal events as possible.

Please join me all month long as we get caught up with some new haunted locations in West Virginia and beyond, take a look at some of SRI's events/investigations, and explore everything strange and spooky throughout the tri-state. This is my favorite time of the year, and I'm excited to get to share it with you.  Happy haunting!

July's Ultimate Blog Challenge!

TNT Bunker Selfie!
(There's a reason I look so...rough...here, lol)

Happy July! Can you believe that 2022 is already half over? It's been a super busy and super productive year for both Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State and Spectral Research and Investigations (SRI). Speaking events, conventions, paranormal meetups, podcast appearances, and plenty of investigations have kept us on our toes over the last 6 months, and I'm excited to see what the second half of the year will bring.

I'll be starting off by delving once again into the Ultimate Blog Challenge, which means (hopefully) another 31 straight days of brand new blog content, covering all sorts of spooky and Fortean topics. I'll be sharing some of what SRI has been up to, a few new haunted places in West Virginia, some monster stories, some UFO stories, and just all kinds of weirdness.

I'm not sure how I managed to do it, but I successfully completed both the January and the April UBC, so I'm hoping to carry on the success through July. However, please don't be too hard on me if I disappoint. As you may have noticed, I haven't been super active here on the blog or on my social media accounts. On May 2, we got the diagnosis that my mom's cancer had spread into her bones. It's been a difficult journey, trying to support her physically and emotionally. I've become her primary caretaker, and the one who takes her to all her appointments...which have numbered in the dozens. We've still got a long road ahead of us, but things are starting to look up a bit, so hopefully I'll be able to devote some time to sharing the spooky history of West Virginia and beyond with all of you.

So, wish me luck, and if you don't mind, please send my mom lots of positive, healing thoughts during this difficult time. And let's all enjoy a month of brand new paranormal content from Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State!

Welcome to a Spooky 2021!

Happy New Year from Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State!

It's January, which means it's time for me to once again attempt the Ultimate Blog Challenge---that means that once again I'll be attempting to write a brand new blog EVERY DAY throughout the month. I haven't been doing too well with these UBC's, but I think January 2021 will be different.  This year, not only do I feel super motivated, but, I've 'cheated' just a little bit.  I've already started! I was able to use some of my down time over Christmas break to schedule-post quite a few blogs for January, and I think you'll really enjoy some of the strange and spooky topics coming up. (Unfortunately, I found out AFTER this was written that the UBC has changed it plans. Instead of a January challenge, they're doing a February challenge---which means you'll get TWO months crammed with new content here at Theresa's Haunted History!)

In addition to the Ultimate Blog Challenge, I've tacked on an added challenge for myself. Round 2 of my Haunted America page has been incomplete for quite a few years now. With only 12 states left to cover until completion, I thought the UBC would be a great motivator to finish that up. Over the course of the month, I'll be sharing the legend of a haunted bridge in Indiana, a library in Kansas where the head librarian refuses to leave, and a ghostly museum in New Mexico.

There will also be Friday Funnies, book reviews, vintage newspaper articles, personal ghost experiences, cryptids, haunted places in West Virginia, and a healthy dose of all things strange and fascinating. I hope you'll join me on this wild and weird paranormal ride, this month and throughout the year. Instead of my usual listing of resolutions and goals for the whole year, I think I'll be taking things one month at a time. Check back often to see if I can actually complete January's 31 Days of Blogs/12 Haunted America series, and whether or not I continue another challenge for myself in February!

Let me know what spooky things 2021 has in store for you!  Are you planning any awesome investigations, or going on any ghost tours? Do you have a new book, YouTube channel or Podcast you'd like to plug? Lemme know in the comments below, or join me over at Theresa's Haunted History Facebook and share your paranormal plans for the year!  Stay spooky, everyone.

'Ghost' Haunts Grafton's Consolidated Manufacturing Company

It's time for another Throwback Thursday vintage newspaper article!  Today's selection comes from the February 22, 1916 edition of The Daily Telegram, a newspaper based in Clarksburg, WV.  The article mentions that for some time, the Consolidated Manufacturing Company in nearby Grafton had been the site of a haunting.  However, one brave watchman confronted the 'ghost' and found it was none other than a former employee of the plant who had been stealing items, including a typewriter, from his former place of employment.  The story has a happy ending, though, as the ghost wasn't prosecuted, but instead was simply allowed to return the stolen items!

I absolutely love these old ghost stories that remind us that not everything is what it seems!  I'm glad the company regained its stolen property and that the ghostly thief, probably someone fairly down on his luck, was spared a prison sentence in lieu of doing the right thing.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a whole lot about the Consolidated Manufacturing Company.  From a website devoted to Carr China, it appears that the Consolidated Manufacturing Company of Grafton was built along the Tygart River around 1913, but would go bankrupt in 1916. Later that year, it would become known as 'the pottery,' or the home for Carr China until its closure in 1952.  The building caught on fire in July of 1966, and its burned out remains quickly became a haven for vandals and vagrants.  It was eventually torn down, taking its 'haunted' past with it to the grave.

Family Death Omen

Like many people throughout the United States and elsewhere in the world, current events have left me with more than the usual free time lately!  I've gotten back into genealogy as a way to fill the time and escape the anxiety.  But, being the paranormal enthusiast that I am, of course I have to throw some family ghost stories into my work as well!

If you've read similar blog posts of mine, you may remember that I credit my grandparents as being a huge influence on my love of the paranormal growing up.  They would often tell me family ghost stories and personal experiences to entertain me during the many overnight visits to their home in Beckley, West Virginia.  Some of my favorite stories came from grandmother's younger days.  One such story is the tale of a bloody pillow and a calendar that refused to stay on the wall from East Beckley, which I've previously written about.  Another favorite is the story of the Woman in White.

Before moving into Raleigh County around the Beckley area, my grandmother and her family originally lived in Summers County, around the Hinton and Talcott areas.  Being your average Appalachian, the family could trace its ancestry back to Ireland and England, with a strong mix of Native American blood thrown in. In fact, most of the extended family lived in an area of Summers County known as Irish Mountain.  I believe that it was partly due to this lineage that led to such a strong belief system in the supernatural.  Anyway, I was fairly young when this tale was told to me, and when I recently asked other family members what they could remember, they didn't know a ton about it.  Apparently, I was the spooky kid in the family who begged for these ghost stories!

So, piecing together what I can remember and what others could confirm, I believe these sightings did happen mostly around the Irish Mountain area prior to 1940, with at least one case happening during World War II in Beckley.  My grandmother would tell me that members of her family were known to witness the apparition of a woman in white along the road, while coming home after dark.  This woman would sometimes be seen standing by the side of the road.  Other times, she would be directly in front of their vehicle.  In at least one case, a witness believed he had hit the woman with his car and jumped out to find no one.

The witnesses all reported that it was a woman in a flowing white gown who was seen after dark out on the road, but other details seemed to change from person to person. Those who got a good look said she had no face.  Others said she emitted a strange wail or cry. To some, she seemed vaporous and ghostly, while to others she seemed as flesh and blood as you or I.  But no matter how she manifested, one thing was for sure:  seeing this woman was a bad omen, often heralding the early death of whomever came across her on that lonely, dark road.

My grandmother came from a family of ten children, raised alone by my great-grandma after my great-grandfather died when my grandmother was just a toddler.  She was the second to youngest child, and the family relied heavily on help from the older girls to support the family.  One of the older girls was Thelma.

My grandmother was not quite five years old when Thelma died, but she must have made an impression on her.  She always told me that not only did I look like her, but I reminded her so much of the strong-willed, vivacious Thelma.  As a side bar, a few years ago I started researching Thelma and found the greatest newspaper article of all time.  Thelma and her sister, Goldie, were apparently party girls who said to hell with Prohibition.  After being picked up several times for drinking, both girls were thrown in jail!  Anyway, my grandmother's recollection was that Thelma passed away from tuberculosis shortly after giving birth to a baby girl out of wedlock, who was raised as my grandmother's sister.  The father was said to have been a traveling salesman who left shortly after he found out she was pregnant.

Again, during my research, I tracked down Thelma's death certificate.  We were surprised to see that even though we couldn't find her marriage certificate, she was listed as being married.  And, she didn't pass away from tuberculosis---her cause of death was listed as diabetes! The facts remain, however, that she died at the young age of 21 years, and did leave behind a baby girl to be raised by my great-grandmother. It was also common knowledge within the family that shortly before her death, Thelma had seen the Woman in White and KNEW that her time on this earth would be cut short.

One other sibling was also said to have been the victim of the apparition.  My grandmother's brother, Paul, mysteriously vanished and was presumed dead after the Normandy Invasion.  Prior to getting the news no mother ever wants to get, my great-grandmother reportedly witnessed the faceless Woman in White.  However, unlike all the other stories, she saw the apparition not on the road, but in her own home this time!  The family had since moved from Irish Mountain and was living in Beckley at the time. Did the ghostly woman follow the family to its new home in order to resume her role as bad omen?

I've often wondered if there was a chance that my family's Irish ancestry was key here.  There are some similarities to the Banshee and this Woman in White, especially in the versions of the story where she was heard wailing before someone died.  As far as I know, Paul was the last victim of woman, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that other branches of the family who still live in Summers County still tell tales about a ghostly apparition heralding bad news.

Goodbye, 2019....Hello 2020!

Happy New Year!  It's time to say goodbye to 2019...and hello to 2020.  This has been a crazy year. I met my husband in January and got married in March.  My mom battled (and won!) against breast cancer. My tiny boy turned DOUBLE DIGITS! I've spent many a day traveling between Hurricane and Grafton, and many a night sitting in hospital rooms.

With all the craziness going on, this blog has suffered, and to my regular readers, I apologize.  As life is settling back into a routine, I'm ready to get back to bringing you all the coolest ghost stories, haunted locations, urban legends, and just anything and everything spooky related to West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky and beyond!  To kick start a new year of new content, I'll once again be doing the Ultimate Blog Challenge.  That means there will be a new blog post every day throughout January.  I have failed miserably during the last few challenges, so I'm hoping the motivation of a new year will give me the boost I need to make it through this time.

If you don't already, please follow me on Facebook for lots of fun and spooky articles, photos, and much more!  It's also the best place to contact me with your questions, comments, and suggestions for haunted locations. Pop on over and let me know if you have any paranormal-related New Year's resolutions, or if you have any awesome investigations, trips to haunted locations, conferences/events, books, podcasts, or anything else spooky coming up in 2020 that'd you'd like to share! You can also find me on Twitter and on Instagram.

I hope you and yours have a safe and happy New Year, and that 2020 is a great year for you.  Thank you so much for continuing this journey with me as my blog and my involvement in the paranormal community has evolved, shifted, be put on hold, etc.!  I appreciate all the support and kind words you've shown me over the years.  In a few weeks, this blog will be celebrating its NINTH anniversary!

BONUS

Curious as to what the Top 3 blog posts of 2019 were?  Here's what people were reading and sharing the most this year!

3. David Morgan's Vision---Early West Virginia pioneer, David Morgan, had a sickbed vision that saved the lives of his children from an Indian attack. This tale of supernatural intervention has been passed down from generation to generation, and there is even a historical marker documenting the prophetic dream.

2. Mason County's Mysterious Skeletons---A newspaper from 1821 shares the news of four giant skeletons found in a burial mound, located on a Mason County, WV farm. Folklore is full of claims that West Virginia's Adena burial mounds contain giant skeletal remains of a race of people long forgotten.

1. The Sistersville Stocking Lady---There's a tombstone in Sistersville, WV with a highly damaged carving of an angelic woman atop.  Local legend states than anyone foolish enough to touch the 'Stocking Lady' will meet a horrible fate.

Here We Go Again!

It's October!  Can you believe it?  This is my favorite month of the year....and the busiest month of the year for Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State!  If you haven't done so yet, you'll want to follow me on Facebook for 31 days full of spooky, Halloween goodness.

Each day will be a day full of posts dedicated to a new spooky topic, beginning with Edgar A. Poe today and followed by Appalachian Granny Witches tomorrow.  You'll wanna check back each day for articles, photos, discussions, and even a few giveaways!

You'll also want to check out the blog each day because once again, I've joined the Ultimate Blog Challenge!  For a whole month, I'll be posting fresh new content for your enjoyment.  New West Virginia hauntings, new paranormal photos, new book reviews, and so much more ghostly and Halloween articles are coming your way! I've failed miserably the last few times I've attempted this challenge, but October is MY month and I'm dedicated to seeing it through to the end this time.  I feel confident, but a little nervous because...

...I'm also going to be super busy this month!  I'll be attending The WV CASE Paranormal Expo in Morgantown on October 12th and I'll have a table set up at the Beckley Fall Oddities Fair on October 26th. There are a few haunted house attractions I'm planning to visit and a few ghost tours I've scheduled to attend.  I've got a few other paranormal and Halloween-related events lined up this month and I'm going to try my best to shove in as much spooky fun as possible. Of course, I'll be sharing all those experiences with YOU!

Halloween is my favorite holiday and autumn is my favorite time of the year.  I'm excited for another opportunity to spend it with you all.  Let me know down in the comments, or join the discussion over on Facebook and let me know what this October has in store for you!  Any investigations planned? Going on any ghost tours?  Seeing any spooky movies this season?  Feel free to share your plans and let us all know how YOU'RE making the most out of Spooky Season 2019.

Happy Haunting, ya'll!

April Updates at Theresa's Haunted History!

Oh, wow!  It's been a long time since I've updated the blog and given Theresa's Haunted History Facebook Page the attention it deserves!  But, it's a new month and a chance for a new start...and I'm ready to finally get back into the swing of things.

If you've been following me on Facebook, you might have seen a quick post I made a couple of weeks ago, partly explaining my absence on social media and in the paranormal world:  I GOT MARRIED! That's not an April Fool's Day joke; I actually got married on March 14th at the Harrison County courthouse, wearing a pair of jeans and my Braxton County Monster t-shirt!

After an exceptionally long bout with depression (which also added to my lack of motivation in keeping things updated around here) I was texting a colleague and accidentally typed in the wrong number.  In a weird case of synchronicity that I cannot explain and still have trouble understanding myself, the number I texted happened to belong to the love of my life....15+ years ago!  We found out who each other was, started talking, and well...the rest is happily ever after.

The only problem is...he lives in Grafton and I live in Teays Valley.  In fact, I actually wrote a blog post about a spooky experience I had on Route 50 (The Headless Shadow Being of Route 50) when I used to drive up here every weekend to see him during our first attempt at romance so many years ago. Now that things are finally calming down somewhat, I'm eager to get started back.  And what better way to get the ball rolling than to once again attempt the Ultimate Blog Challenge for April??  Yeah, yeah...it seems pretty crazy given my past track record, but I'm going to give it a shot, as I've got so many spooky stories, event updates, book reviews, photos, and much more ghosty goodness that I want to share with you all.

Thank you so much for being so supportive during a difficult-turned-magical time.  I hope you enjoy the fun stuff I have planned for the next month!  Spending so much time in Grafton has given me the opportunity to share photos and stories from a ton of spooky new places that I normally may not have had the opportunity to visit, so I'm hoping this month and all that follow are filled with plenty of inspiration!  I've missed you all and am so excited to start immersing myself back into the paranormal world...and sharing every step along the way with you all.

Have a great April, and make sure to follow me on Facebook for updates on new blogs and plenty of other awesome, fun stuff.  Oh, and make sure to keep your eyes open...I'm close to an even 5000 LIKES on Facebook, and when that happens, there will be a HUGE giveaway!  I'll be sharing details about that later on, so make sure you check back often to see how YOU can win.  Stay spooky, my friends!

Cemetery Scare: A Friday Night Funny

This is one of those things that I laughed harder than necessary at...and I hope you get a good chuckle out of it as well!  The next time you're lurking around a cemetery at night and see a couple of scared kids, give them something to tell they're grandchildren (or therapist) some day!  Happy Friday, everyone!  I'm still working through my January Ultimate Blog Challenge; I hope you'll join me here and at Theresa's Haunted History Facebook every day this month for plenty of ghost stories, haunted places, weird history, and of course...a weekly dose of spooky humor.

Welcome to a Spooky 2019!

Another year has gone by and while we say goodbye to 2018, we're charging full steam ahead into 2019! And...

Oh. My. Gosh.  Why do I keep doing this to myself?  Once again, I have signed up to participate in the Ultimate Blog Challenge.  That means that once again, I will be pushing myself to publish a brand new blog post EVERY single day throughout the month of January.  That's starting the year off with thirty-one new blog posts!

It's not totally out of reach, though.  Although I nearly finished last April and totally bombed out last July, I rocked the October challenge, successfully publishing a new blog every day for the entire month.  Given that my favorite holiday, Halloween, awaited me at the end of the challenge made the whole thing a little easier.  There's just a lot to write about that time of year on a blog like this one!

I'm hoping that this challenge will just as easy as October's...and just as rewarding as well.  I think it's going to be an excellent way to kick off 2019!  Like always, I have tons of plans in store for where I want to take this blog, as well as where I want to take my work in the paranormal research field.  I'm not going to bother with any New Year's Resolutions or goals this year, other than I want to push my own comfort levels and make this year better than last.  I truly want those who read and/or follow my work to walk away informed, entertained, and maybe even a little bit inspired.

But what about you?  Do you have any paranormal related goals you're hoping to accomplish this year?  Are you starting or expanding a YouTube Channel, blog or social media group?  Are you starting or joining a new investigation group?  Do you have any really cool investigations coming up this year, or any haunted places you really want to hit up?  Any awesome books on your to-be-read list that deal with the paranormal?  Let me know how you plan on making 2019 your spookiest year yet!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!

Welcome, October!

BOO!  Welcome to October at Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State!  October is my favorite month, but its also my busiest month in real life AND here on the blog.  I'm excited to bring you a month FULL of spooky stories, ghost sightings, cryptozoological updates, and all things paranormal-related.

I've decided to once again give the Ultimate Blog Challenge a try.  Yep, that means that theoretically I will be posting a brand new blog each and every day for 31 days, culminating with my favorite day of the year---Halloween!  Although I did really well during the April Blog Challenge, I had to abandon my July attempt due to illness.  I'm feeling pretty good about the October challenge, though, and have already schedule-posted quite a few blogs.  So, you know you'll at least get SOME new content, even if I tap out early.

Witches, werewolves, vampires, UFOs, and of course, GHOSTS will be flooding this blog all month long, with an emphasis on stories from West Virginia.  But, if you're not from the Mountain State, don't fret---there will be haunted locations from other areas featured, as well as plenty of general ghostly goodness.  I'm actually really excited to be sharing some awesome new stories...and there will also be an occasional update to older blogs thrown in for good measure.

The fun won't end with just new blog posts!  October is full of special features over on Theresa's Haunted History Facebook, as well.  Every Wednesday, I'll be sharing a Halloween-themed ghost story from the popular site, WVGhosts.com.  Each day at 3 p.m. I'll be sharing a vintage ghost-themed Halloween graphic for your visual pleasure.  Mondays will be discussion days where I'll be asking YOU for your opinions and stories on a variety of spooky topics.  There may be a few additional surprises thrown in throughout the month as well as plenty of shares of anything and everything paranormal-related that I think you all would enjoy.

Speaking of sharing, I wanted to share the info on this adorable graphic I found to illustrate today's blog post!  I came across this and thought it was perfect for me. The image is called Super Spook, and is the work of DeviantArt artist, CodiBear. Check out CodiBear's other work and social media platforms at the link provided.

Stay spooky ya'll and have an awesome October!

Theresa Takes on July's Ultimate Blog Challenge!

Woohoo! It's time for another round of the Ultimate Blog Challenge, in which I challenge myself to create a new post every day for an entire month.  That's 31 blogs this month, but I feel confident.  Back when I attempted the challenge in April, I ALMOST completed it---I was short just THREE blogs for the month.  In my defense, I was suffering from a super-crazy, super-painful bout of TMJ, but this time, I have no excuses.  I'm either going to complete this challenge or die trying...and if that happens, I'll have plenty of hands-on ghostly experience to hopefully share during the next challenge!

Please check back daily for fun and spooky new content concerning all things weird, ghostly, and paranormal throughout West Virginia, the tri-state, and beyond.  And, if you'd like to see a certain location or topic featured, you can find me over at Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State Facebook page.  Also, if you're a blogger yourself, definitely check out the link above to the Ultimate Blog Challenge.  It's free and open to everyone.

Watch Your Language! Speaking to the Dead in Their Native Tongue

It's been awhile since I've posted a Monday Meme, but I saw this one and knew I had to share it. It's hilarious---it definitely made me chuckle, because it is something that I've seen more than once. And every time I see it, I think, "What are they thinking?"

While it is funny, it actually is pretty thought-provoking as well. In today's paranormal investigation/ghost hunting culture, EVP (electronic voice phenomena) work is an integral part of the process. Personally, I feel that some of our strongest data and potential evidence comes from our audio. Therefore, its crucial to do everything possible in order to maximize EVP results. Way back in 2012, I blogged about some EVP Tips and Tricks, but I didn't really go in depth about language.

I understand that not all of us are as lucky as the TAPS team is above. Most of us will probably never conduct an investigation in a foreign country where the official language is not that of our own. That doesn't mean that we should just ignore the whole topic of ghosts that speak a different language, however.

This is where a little historic research comes in. Just because you and everyone around you speaks the same language, doesn't necessarily mean that was always the case!  The town of Gallipolis, Ohio was once a French Colony! However, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone living there today that speaks fluid French as a first language, on a regular basis.  In Northern West Virginia, many Italian, Hungarian, and other immigrants worked the coal mines and many never learned much, if any, English at all. You might live in an area that was once home to a large Native American population.

If you suspect that you might have a ghost that speaks a certain language other than your own, familiarize yourself with a few key phrases that you might want to ask/say during your EVP session. It doesn't have to be anything fancy; a simple "Hello, my name is....What's yours?" is a good start. If an entity can understand you and thinks you can understand it, they may be more likely to attempt communication.

Similarly, you might get an EVP that sounds like speech---but it sounds like its in another language. If you are familiar with some different languages that were spoken in that area or may have been spoken by the people associated with the location, you can more easily and quickly get it translated.

One last thing to consider is this...is it all necessary? I've seen instances where investigators go into a location in a foreign country, speak their own language, and then get an EVP response IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE!  If we use the posted meme for an example, why would a 500 year old German ghost respond to a question in English?  If I could answer that, I'd be a hero in the EVP world. Alas, I am not...but there are a few theories floating around out there:

1. Spirits vs. Ghosts---While the terms are often used interchangeably, its pretty widely accepted that there is a difference between spirits and ghosts. Spirits are entities that are 'higher up,' so to speak. They are the souls of people who have passed and crossed over...but have returned for whatever reason. They may also be entities that were never human, such as nature spirits. Ghosts, on the other hand, are usually described as the souls of deceased persons who are earthbound---they've never crossed over. If you're contacting a spirit, who is a higher being, perhaps things such as language and other earthly constructs are not a problem. They can understand and communicate in any language.

2. You're not really getting a response from any spirit, ghost, or other paranormal entity. Instead, you're picking up radio waves, your own thoughts telekinetically imprinted on the recorder, or tapping into free-floating voices and sounds that are just out there, floating around. I know, it gets a little strange...but that's why we love it right? Part of the joy of paranormal investigation is trying to make the unknown known, to unravel the mysteries that have been eluding us since the beginning of time. Keep searching for answers, and have a wonderfully spooky Monday!

Happy Easter from Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State!

Happy Easter from Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State!  Also, Happy April Fool's Day!  It's not often that we get to celebrate two holidays in one day, so make the most of it...just keep your pranks funny (and even spooky!), but not too mean. If you need some inspiration, just check YouTube for a never-ending stream of ghost prank videos, many from Japan.

And, since its the first of the month, I wanted to share with you an exciting endeavor I'm taking on throughout April. I have joined the Ultimate Blog Challenge! The main 'challenge' component is 30 blog posts in 30 days.  That means that I will have to post a brand new blog EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Never in the history of Theresa's Haunted History have I been able to post a new blog 30 days straight. It's a daunting task, but I'm ready to take it on in order to bring you all a ton of new and interesting content!  And speaking of content...if you're jonesing for some more Easter goodies, check out my blog about Horrifying Easter Bunnies!  Stay spooky and have a great Easter/April Fool's Day!
