Once again, I am taking advantage of the awesome FREE online parapsychology courses offered in conjunction with the AZIRE Academy and the Parapsychology Foundation. This year's course, which is available through the WizIQ platform, is titled: Parapsychology: Research and Investigation (ParaMOOC2018).
The live class sessions started on January 22nd and opened with a wonderful overview of the program and how to use the WizIQ platform and additional resources. This live presentation, complete with a very active live chat, was presented by Dr. Nancy Zingrone and Dr. Carlos Alvarado.
Today, another live presentation was given by Robert McLuhan concerning a wonderful resource---The Psi Encyclopedia. The Psi Encyclopedia began in 2014 as an accurate and non-biased collection of articles and data concerning psychic research/parapsychology. It is maintained by the Society for Psychical Research and now boasts over 200 articles. There's even some information on poltergeists, ghosts, and hauntings that will be of interest to most readers here!
The next live lecture isn't until Thursday, and if you're interested in taking part, there is plenty of time to still join! All the live lectures are recorded, and the recordings are usually available within a few hours of the end of the live session. The organizers of this course also provide downloadable Powerpoint presentations to accompany the lectures, as well as additional readings and resources. Recorded talks from previous courses are also available to watch at any time.
Needless to say, I am once again stoked to have this information available for free! There's a wonderful lineup of guest presenters and topics coming up within the next several weeks and I'll try to share as much information as I can, both here and over at Theresa's Haunted History Facebook. I'm also supplementing my studies with some reading from my personal library AND plenty of YouTube videos/lectures. I'll try to share some of those as well, too. Stay spooky ya'll...and come join me on this journey of learning!

Spooky YouTube Subscriptions, Volume 2
On a wet, rainy day back in July, I decided to share a few of my favorite paranormal-related YouTube channels with you guys. Well, its September and since its another wet, rainy day here in the tri-state, I thought this would be a perfect time to share a few more channels from my own list of favorites! I know I've said it before, but I REALLY, REALLY love YouTube, lol. It is such a great resource for paranormal investigators. You can access lectures, audio books, documentaries, investigation footage, and all sorts of other educational content for FREE in one easy to use website. However, there's also a lot of junk to sift through, which is why I thought it would be fun to share some of the gems I've found.
1. Michelle Belanger: You probably know Michelle from her work on Ryan Buell's show, Paranormal State. However, Michelle has quite a body of work on her own, separate from the affiliation with The Paranormal Research Society, especially in the realm of energy vampirism. She has some great videos on a variety of subjects, including Ouija Boards, hauntings, and of course, vampires.
2. MUFON: The Mutual UFO Network has a great channel featuring case profiles, investigator profiles, and even full lectures from conferences and symposiums. If you are interested in ufology, this is a channel you HAVE to bookmark.
3. One Candle Society: This group formed in 2014 and uploads educational content on paranormal topics and specific hauntings, as well as investigation footage. There isn't a ton of material on the channel yet, but what is there is of specific interest to those in the tri-state region!
4. Open Mind Productions: Another channel for those studying ufology, Open Minds uploads videos on current UFO sightings, historical documentation, interviews, and much more.
5. Paranormal Quest: This group of investigators seeks to find the answers to questions few dare to even ask...and most of their videos feature investigations, interviews, and historical background work on haunted locations in West Virginia and surrounding areas!
6. Paranormal Warehouse: A channel featuring videos on just about everything and anything paranormal! There are different types of videos of varying lengths, so you're sure to find something you're both interested in and have time to listen to/watch!
And there you have it---six more spooky YouTube channels to explore this weekend! If for some reason you don't see anything that is of particular interest to you, or you've already binge-watched all the available content and want more, never fear! You can always go back and check out my Spooky YouTube Subscriptions, Volume 1 blog...and of course, keep an eye out for Volume 3, due out on another wet and rainy boring day!

My Paranormal Education---"Fall Semester"
Readers to this blog and the Theresa's Haunted History Facebook page have probably already realized that I am a huge supporter of higher education and continuing education for paranormal investigators. In a field that incorporates so many different disciplines and is constantly changing, we need to stay informed, educated, and at the top of our game. It's a definite step in the struggle to take paranormal research from a fringe field and turn it into a legitimate and recognized area of study!
And...I'm proud to say that even though my spare time is short and my funds are tight, I have always found ways to practice what I preach! This October, I am involved in three courses that I hope will contribute to my knowledge of the field and make me a better, more informed researcher/investigator. The first two are online classes through Open2Study. They are MOOCs----Massive Open Online Courses----and are FREE!
1. Basic Physics---This class is taught by Dr. Wayne Rowlands of the Swinburne University of Technology, and as the title says, its an introductory course in basic physics. Science courses are always recommended material for paranormal investigators, but I have a specific reason for taking this particular class. Carrie, my friend and HPIR colleague, have recently discussed the merits of becoming MUFON certified. The manual and accompanying test is a little too pricey for me right now, so the plan is to wait until after the new year. Until then, I'm trying to prepare as much as possible by reading and watching everything I can on ufology and taking relevant courses. Last month I took the Open2Study Astronomy course and was quite pleased with it.
2. Early Childhood Education---This class is taught by Caitlin O'Connell and Helen Lawrence from Gowrie Victoria. Early Childhood Education might sound like a weird option for a paranormal education, but I do think it has a lot of potential. As part of our investigative field work, we often work private residences. Many of the clients for these private residences do have young children in the home and these children are being affected in some way by the perceived paranormal activity. It's vital to be able to understand how a young child's developing mind works and how they perceive the world around them so that we can offer the best advice and course of action possible for the family. This particular class heavily emphasizes developmental milestones, normal behaviors for children at various stages up to about age 5, and of course, how they perceive and learn---all areas that can be useful when dealing with our youngest clients.
****
The last class I'm taking this month is an actual live, in-person class, taught at Ohio University's Southern Campus. Todd Martin is the instructor of the 4-week course community education course on Paranormal Phenomenon and Local Mysteries. This course was a great value at only $35 and in addition to the class periods (every Tuesday from 7-9pm) there will be a chance to actually investigate a potentially haunted location!
This course goes beyond just ghost hunting and ghost research, however. It delves into all areas of paranormal studies, including ufology, cryptozoology, and stuff that is just plain weird---but very, very interesting! It is so awesome to have the chance to meet and interact with so many other people who share a similar interest in the field. Although thus far I have been very familiar with most, if not all, of the topics presented, I find this course extremely interesting and beneficial. It helps me see what specific areas others are interested in and what sorts of questions they have and what kind of information they are looking for. I'll be basing plenty of future blogs on conversations generated through the course.
If you missed this session, Mr. Martin indicated that there will be a spring session offered. As soon as I see more information about it, I'll share it on Facebook. Until then, check out this nice write-up on the course from the Ironton Tribune!

FREE Online Photography Education
If you know me or are familiar with this blog, you've probably already realized that I am a HUGE supporter of higher education for paranormal investigators! In a field as dynamic as this one that incorporates so many different disciplines, there is always something to learn.
One area where I definitely see a need for more training and education is the field of photography. While there aren't any real 'experts' in the paranormal field (how can you become an expert or even receive any type of certified credentials to study something that isn't proven to exist?) a good bump to the resume is being proficient and knowledgeable in the photographic process. A little knowledge of photography can go a LONG way in adding integrity to both your evidence collection and your analysis of possible evidence.
Obviously, nothing beats hands-on experience, but taking a live class can be hard for those who are already busy with careers, family, and other pursuits. Plus, it can get expensive! That's why I've compiled this short list of completely FREE photography courses available ONLINE! I have personally taken each of these courses myself and recommend them. I think there's enough here that anyone, from the complete beginner and up can learn a little something will be come in handy. There are literally tons of different photography courses out there, so if you find one that isn't on the list that you recommend, please let me know and I'll be happy to add!
FREE PHOTOGRAPHY COURSES
Digital Photography by ALISON Courses--This is an intense, but extremely thorough lecture series offered FREE through ALISON Courses by Harvard University. After working your way through 12 modules, which contain varying numbers of lecture videos each, you have the option to take the course assessment and earn a certificate of completion. Topics include an extensive view of the inner workings of the digital camera, focusing on the DSLR, exposure, light, optics, etc. You may start this class at any time and work your way through it at your own pace.
The Art of Photography by Open2Study--This class is taught by Dr. Shane Hulbert of RMIT University, and even though it is geared more towards the artistic application of photography, there is plenty of excellent information useful to the paranormal investigator. There are four modules within this course, each with 10 videos each. Each week you work your way through a module, taking a one-question quiz after each video, followed by an assessment of the whole module after the tenth video. Topics covered include the different settings on your camera and what they mean, the meaning of RAW and why it should be used, image editing software, how the aperture and shutter speed works, etc. This course is designed to take 4 weeks to complete. It runs every 5 weeks, with the next session beginning on September 7, 2015.
FreePhotoCourse.com--Not interested in a traditional course format with quizzes and assessments? I'd recommend this series of tutorials and education from Free Photo Course. You can read through the material, complete with reference photos at your own pace and not have to worry about deadlines or tests. There's some great basics here, including a brief history of photography, which was a nice addition.

FREE Parapsychology Course (January 2015)
The Rhine Research Center defines parapsychology as 'the scientific study of interactions between living organisms and their external environment that seem to transcend the known physical laws of nature. Parapsychology is a component of the broader study of consciousness and the mind.'
It goes on to list the FIVE areas of study within parapsychology:
1. Telepathy-mind to mind communication through a means other than the normal senses.
2. Clairvoyance or Remote Viewing-knowledge of objects, people or events that are hidden via space or time.
3. Precognition-knowledge of an event that has not yet occurred, or information that appears to be transferred from the future into the present.
4. Psychokinesis (PK)-Mind interacting with matter at a distance.
5. Survival Studies-The nature of human consciousness and an examination of whether consciousness survives the physical form. This includes mediumship research, reincarnation, out of body experiences, apparitions, and ghost activities.
Up until this point, the majority of my interests, and thus work, in the paranormal field have had a fairly narrow focus on Survival Studies, mainly ghosts, apparitions, and hauntings. However, in order to have a fuller understanding of my chosen focus area, I realize the need for a broader education of the entire parapsychology field.
Luckily, I found a wonderful, FREE opportunity! Starting on January 5, 2015, the Parapsychology Foundation is partnering with the AZIRE to offer a free course entitled Parapsychology and Anomalistic Psychology: Research and Theory. Hosted through WizIQ, this course will consist of over 22 video lectures running almost daily through February 14th. A partial list of speakers has been published, and there are some interesting lectures, ranging from those geared to the beginner to those very specific to certain areas of study. The majority of speakers are associated with the Rhine Research Center in some way or another and are noted in their field as being top researchers.
This link will give you all the information you need to sign up for the course: Parapsychology MOOC
I'm excited for this and I hope some of you will join me in this endeavor!

Higher Education for Paranormal Investigators
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) provide a FREE way for paranormal investigators to expand their knowledge on a variety of helpful and interesting topics. I've hand-picked a few from Coursera.org, my favorite provider, on some very special courses for paranormal enthusiasts!
Every year, my New Year's resolutions include a commitment to further my education in the paranormal field. This is a field that is always changing and it's a field that incorporates knowledge from many other disciplines. To really give paranormal research and investigation the respect it deserves, a working knowledge of the sciences, psychology, religion and history (just to name a few) is critical.
I'm always looking for economical (well, cheap, hehe) ways to improve my knowledge and one way to do this is through the emerging popularity of MOOCs...massive open online courses! If you're not familiar with MOOCs, basically they are college level courses offered FOR FREE online!
Each class is set up a little differently, but generally consists of taped lectures that you watch at your own leisure online and short required readings. Most classes require quizzes/tests/homework assignments in order to receive a certificate of completion. All materials are provided online for free and the courses are open to anyone with internet access.
There are so many websites that offer MOOCs, but my favorite I've tried so far as been Coursera.org. Through Coursera, you can take classes from world renowned colleges and universities and choose from a huge selection! I personally recommend any science or psychology courses for paranormal investigators, but this month, there's gonna be a few choices that I thought would be of particular interest to the paranormal community!
Modern European Mysticism and Psychological Thought
This is a 7 week course that begins on January 13th. It will be taught by Jonathan Garb of Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Please check out the link for a full syllabus and course outline.
Astrobiology and the Search for Extraterrestrial Life
This is a 5 week course beginning January 20th. It's being taught by Charles Cockell of the University of Edinburgh. The topic will be about the conditions and probability of finding life outside of planet Earth.
Soul Beliefs: Causes and Consequences
This class also begins January 20th and will run 13 weeks. It's being hosted by Rutgers University and will discuss how different cultures define "the soul."
If you enroll in any of these courses, or choose something else altogether, please let me know!
